Copenhagen at Christmas (the other side of the engagement)

Having spent pre-Christmas last year in Stockholm (and loved being in Scandinavia), this year our Christmas expedition was to Denmark see Copenhagen and its surrounds.   Having heard so much about Copenhagen from many of our friends here, we felt it was a ‘must’ to travel to.  And so early Christmas morn, whilst kids all over the world were rushing to the Christmas tree to open their pressies, I took a little box with a diamond from under ours, and strapped the backpack on for yet another adventure.

Being a slight airports / planes nerd, the opportunity to fly out of the infamous T5 at Heathrow was something I wanted to tick off my planes & airports list, so I was quite excited.  I’m sure that others would describe it as nerves given the expensive present I had in my backpack, but it’s my story and I’m sticking to it! I will however admit that as we walked through security I had visions of the scene from Meet the Parents where Greg Focker has issues with his carry on bag (complete with said ring!).  Thankfully there were no such issues, and (after a compulsory breakfast at Giraffe) we were off to Denmark.

Copenhagen is a lovely city – easy to walk around, and filled with genuinely nice people.  We stayed at the Kong Arthur, a lovely hotel in Nørreport, with a great food market around the corner, and only a short walk into the city centre, where they had gorgeous Christmas lights, and lovehearts tied everywhere, as if to say they knew what was coming! The good part was that it got dark at around 3:30pm every day, so we got a lot of time seeing said lights!  The other thing I wanted to mention was the food – Copenhagen’s long had a reputation for great food, and whilst we didn’t eat at a noted ‘top’ restaurant, we certainly didn’t eat badly at any of our meals at all!

As much as we’d done sightseeing-wise, it’s fair to say that the highlight of our trip was spending Boxing Day night at Tivoli.  I won’t go into too much more detail than what Laura’s already posted, but I will say that:

  1. it wasn’t completely planned out,
  2. no I wasn’t nervous (I don’t think!)
  3. even though it wasn’t snowing, at least the rain held off!
  4. Laura’s cold seemed to ‘mysteriously’ vanish shortly thereafter

All in all, it’s fair to say that Copenhagen was a lovely place to visit, and will hold great memories for us.  And, it’s the first city we’ve visited that Laura didn’t buy earrings (most probably because she was pre-occupied with her other bling!).

Finally I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love and best wishes on the (slightly overdue) announcement of our engagement.   Everyone’s been very excited for us, which is also equally exciting.

PS: a few tips to the uninitiated.  Flying Christmas Day can be quite lonely, but also quite cheap! We saved a bundle by delaying our flights, and it was also empty, and thus had a pick of seats.
